Is Your Restaurant Modern Enough To Appeal To Millennials?

Posted on December 5th, 2017 by Breck Hapner

Millennials, who are broadly defined as individuals currently in their 20s and 30s, make up the largest demographic of the population. It stands to reason, then, that your restaurant should appeal to them.

If you think your business is missing out on millennial customers, it could be because you’re lacking certain modern elements. The good news is that there are steps you can take to attract this lucrative segment of the population to your restaurant.

Modernize Your Menu

Consider giving your menu a makeover. Millennials enjoy healthy and organic options as well as locally produced ingredients. They also gravitate toward craft beers and craft cocktails. You might also consider changing up your menu from time to time or offering seasonal specials.

Millennials have an appreciation for the new and the innovative. In that same vein, eye-appealing plating and beautifully garnished cocktails will have millennials posting pictures on social media – which in turn acts as a free form of advertising for you.

Make sure you have a substantial digital presence as well, via great web design, web development, and mobile app development, providing appealing online ordering and self-service kiosk access.

Provide Customization Options

Millennials enjoy having a sense of ownership and individuality when placing their orders. Offering customization or “build your own” options can help toward that end. The various options should be clearly listed on your menu.

For added convenience – and to make your restaurant even more modern – you might even give customers the option to place their orders on an iPad or at a self-service kiosk, which will give them an extra sense of control over their orders while also increasing order accuracy.

Create A Memorable Experience

For millennials, going out to eat isn’t just about the food. It’s about having an enhanced experience. Part of that experience is the social aspect, but you can also attract millennials by creating a unique dining atmosphere.

Large tables for communal dining or tables that can easily be pushed together allow for conviviality. Hosting fun and enticing events like special happy hours or themed menus can also be a good draw. And if your millennial customers have a memorable dining experience, they’ll be more likely to recommend your restaurant to their friends.

Engage With Millennials Via Social Media

Love it or hate it, social media is essential to almost any business’s marketing strategy. If you aren’t already using social media for your restaurant, you should start now. And if you’re already using it, you need to make sure you’re using it effectively and that you’re engaging with your customers – especially the millennials.

Millennials use social media to the extent that it’s often a punchline, but it is, in fact, a serious marketing tool. Use social media to post pictures of your restaurant and menu items and to announce upcoming events. And be sure to “like” and even repost things your customers have posted.

Offer Online Ordering

Millennials are the generation that grew up with computers, and many of them don’t remember a world without cell phones. They appreciate convenience, and offering online ordering can make them more likely to frequent your restaurant.

Whether you provide online ordering through an app, on your website or both, it should be clean, simple and easy to navigate. It should also allow customers the same customization options that you offer dine-in customers.
